Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, peeled
  • 4-5 cloves
  • 5-6 peppercorns
  • 5-6 fresh basil leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey
  • 2-inch piece of cinnamon stick
  • Optional: Mulethi (licorice root)

Step 1

In a deep saucepan, bring the water to a boil.

Step 2

While the water heats, crush the ginger, cloves, black peppercorns, and cinnamon stick using a mortar and pestle.

Step 3

Once the water is boiling, add the crushed ingredients along with the basil leaves to the saucepan.

Step 4

Lower the heat to medium and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes, reducing the liquid to half.

Step 5

Strain the liquid into a glass or mug and stir in honey. Serve warm.
