5th International Halal Food Conference Proceedings 6: Halal Certification and Industry’s Viewpoint
A Summary of Presentation by Nurlisa Buyong, Ph.D., Quest International
Quest International is a multi national company with manufacturing and representation in 35 countries on 5 continents. The company is comprised of 2 divisions, food and Fragrances. Total sales in 2002 were US$ 1.1 billion.
The food division produces flavors, emulsifiers, hydrocolloids, proteins and bio-ingredients (cultures, enzymes and yeasts) and contributed 60% of sales in 2002. The fragrance division creates fragrances for personal and home care products.
With over 4,600 employees in different parts of the world, sharing information is a challenge. Products made at one manufacturing site are often used as raw materials at another site. The finished produced form that site may be used as a raw material for a third product at another site. It is essential to have an accurate recordkeeping system to track raw materials and finished products. It is also essential to keep track of country food regulations and provide proper documentation for shipments.
Quest does this with user-friendly global databases and a uniform Internet communication system. This helps us keep track of critical information such as allergens, GMO and Halal certification and Halal products.
Quest has designed the Halal compliance into its quality assurance program, just like any other technical requirement.
