IFANCA sponsored and participated at the Chicago Halal Food Festival on September 14, 2013. Approximately 3,900 halal foodies attended the festival that took place at the UIC Forum. The festival featured a number of Chicago halal food companies, including the IFANCA certified Minaret Halal Premium Products and Saffron Road™ Foods. Besides educating halal consumers at our booth, IFANCA also challenged attendees with a Halal Food Quiz. Three questions were asked and the winners took home gift baskets of IFANCA halal-certified foods. Gift baskets included items of the following brands: Abbott’s Ensure Nutrition Shakes, Saffron Road Foods and Wonderful Pistachios. All three of these brands are certified for the US market and carry IFANCA’s Crescent-M Symbol. To see pictures of the festival, see our Halal Consumer Facebook page: http://on.fb.me/1dEwtSf
The Chicago Halal Food Festival also received press coverage from Chicago Tribune, The Chicagoist, Time Out Chicago, and Crain’s Chicago Business for being one of the first halal food festivals the city has seen. The organizers were able to showcase that halal extends far beyond ethnic cuisines like South Asian or Middle Eastern by bringing in restaurants that made halal pastramis, hot dogs, Cuban sandwiches, chicken nuggets, burgers, pastries, ice creams and even Cronuts (a cross between a croissant and doughnut)! We, at IFANCA, will be looking forward to what happens next year.
IFANCA will be a sponsor of the C3 Summit being held at the Union League Club in New York City on October 7th. O ctober is recognized as the quintessential month of fall here in the Northern Hemisphere. The leaves have changed colors, the air is brisk, and pumpkins abound. Even some translations of the Quran have “pumpkin” in them. “But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill. And We caused to grow over him a pumpkin vine,” (37:145-146). Jonah ate from the plant, nourishing himself back to good health, and was also able to shade himself with the plant’s foliage. Is this the same round, orange pumpkin we know and love? Probably not, as most translations use the word “gourd,” which is more general, since a pumpkin is a type of gourd. Similarly, there are translations of Hadith that use “pumpkin” instead of “gourd.” Anas bin Malik reported: “A tailor invited Allah's Messenger (PBUH) to a meal which he had prepared. Anas said: I went along with Allah's Messenger (PBUH) to that feast. He presented to Allah's Messenger (PBUH) barley bread and soup containing pumpkin, and sliced pieces of meat. Anas said: I saw Allah's Messenger (PBUH) going after the pumpkin round the dish, so I have always liked the pumpkin since that day.” Again, does this mean eating pumpkin is sunnah? Some might say yes, which is great news for all those who anticipate the arrival of pumpkin season. But, even if it’s not, pumpkin is definitely a fruit you should be adding to your diet. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, pumpkin has many health benefits.
Good for Your Eyes
A cup of cooked, mashed pumpkin contains more than 200 percent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin A, which aids vision, according to the National Institutes of Health. Pumpkins are also rich in carotenoids (alpha- and beta-carotene), the compounds responsible for pumpkin’s bright orange color, which generate vitamin A in the body.
Help You Lose Weight
We often look to whole grains for generous sources of fiber, but pumpkin is an excellent choice. Canned pumpkin boasts 5 grams per half-cup serving and only 40 calories, keeping you feeling full with far fewer calories than a slice of bread.
May Reduce Cancer Risk
The antioxidant beta-carotene that is responsible for pumpkin’s orange glow also helps ward off cancer. Damage to cells caused by free radicals may play a role in the development of cancer. Antioxidants are chemicals that interact with and neutralize free radicals, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Refuel Your Body
You may have heard that eating a banana after a workout can help you refuel. Turns out a cup of cooked pumpkin has even more refueling potassium, with 564 milligrams to a medium banana’s 422. Potassium helps restore the body’s balance of electrolytes after a heavy workout and keeps muscles functioning at their best. Potassium is also linked to normalizing high blood-pressure.
Don’t Forget the Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are high in immune-boosting zinc and also play a role in the prevention of prostate cancer.
