Islamic Values Emphasize Social Responsibility – IFANCA
Chicago, Nov 10, 2010 - In support of social justice and social responsibility, both of which comprise the foundation of the Muslim faith, IFANCA was present at an event titled "An Interfaith Conversation on Food, Race and Worker Justice in the U.S. Food System". The event was hosted by the Center for New Community University Center in Chicago, on Nov. 10th and 11th, 2010.
According to a well-known hadith (saying of the Prophet Muhammad), when the Prophet was asked if there was a reward for serving animals, (be it feeding them, offering them shelter etc), he replied in the affirmative. He said that there is indeed a reward for serving any living being," noted Dr. Farhat Quadri, Director, Community Relations, IFANCA. "Even animals that are slaughtered for food have to be raised humanely. Given those standards, the welfare of workers, automatically, is of paramount importance to Muslims."
Other attendees included Mr. Taj Suleyman, Center for Intercultural Organizing, Rabbi Morris Allen from the Beth Jacob Congregation, Rabbi Andrea Cohen-Kiener from Interreligious Eco-Justice Network, Anita Green from the United Methodist Church, Rabbi Jill Jacobs, The Rev. Kazi Joshua from Allegheny College, The Reverend Doug Mork of United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, Dawn Nothwehr, Catholic Theological Seminary and Rev. Dave Ostendorf, Garat Ibrahim and Charlotte Williams from the Center for New Community.
Thanksgiving Turkey Drive Concludes With Distribution of 660 Turkeys

The 10th Annual Chicago Muslim Turkey Drive (co-sponsored by AMAL and the IFANCA run Sabeel Food Pantry) came to its end yesterday, and, Alhamdu Lillah (thanks to God) resulted in the delivery of 660 turkeys to needy families on Chicago's South Side. The day began at a little after 9 am with the arrival of a big white truck carrying 165 cases of frozen turkeys to Emmett Till Academy's campus at 65th and Champlaine managed to set up a well-practiced delivery system: a human chain of men moving 55 pound boxes of frozen turkeys from the back of the delivery truck into the school's auditorium entrance, where they were then wheeled by gurney to the auditorium stage and stacked, ready to be distributed.
At the outset, we discovered a major hurdle a few months back when we discovered that turkey prices had risen 20%, due largely to a 50% rise in the price of turkey feed. This led to your coordinator having a few restless nights during the past few weeks, and is the reason that my first set of thanks (after thanking the Almighty) is to everyone who donated this year. Even though we gave away eight fewer turkeys than last year, we actually raised more money, and the fact that you stepped up to cover this increase is a testament to your generosity. In addition, we are proud that even though this is a grass-roots effort organized by Chicago's Muslim community, by our estimates some 10% of the money raised is given by non-Muslims.
This speaks to the fact that what we consider an essential part of our faith – helping those in need – is shared by people of good will of all backgrounds, and that more of these efforts are wanted.

Halal Certification – A Key to International Markets
On Dec 4, 2010, Dr. Muhammad Munir Chaudry, IFANCA President will be addressing Global Halal in Pakistan. Speaking on the Benefits of Halal Certification as part of the inaugural panel, he will elaborate on how halal certification can develop "halal brands" that will be at the forefront of the US$ 2 trillion global halal economy.
The event is expected to have an audience of exporters and businessmen. IFANCA frequently presents at conferences on halal, marketing, food, restaurant and consumers. It shares its experience as a halal certifier for both consumer and foodservice products, all over the world.
Like other students who live on campus, when Muslim students return home during breaks it means getting loads of laundry done. But it also means stocking up on several weeks worth of halal home-made meals. Bradley University, IL Senior Bilaluddin Mohammed was only too familiar with this himself. And that is how he decided to work with University Dining Services at Bradley to establish what is believed to be the first halal food service at an Illinois university.
On the menu currently are halal sandwiches and halal pizza. Halal hotdogs and chicken patties are expected soon. According to the University, across the country, many Muslim students are forced into a quasi-vegetarian lifestyle while attending college, so initiating a halal food service at Bradley has been a top priority among student leaders here for some time.
As reported online: "No matter what background Muslim students are coming from, they will feel so comfortable here and so appreciative of this service because they were raised eating this way," said Mohammed, who is president of the Muslim Student Association. University Dining Services Executive Director Ron Gibson has spent his career accommodating the culinary needs of multicultural university campuses. Under his leadership, Bradley's offerings have expanded dramatically this year.
"We know there is a very diverse group on college campuses nationwide, so to assist with the recruitment process we want to be able to offer foods that are familiar to these groups of young adults," said Mr. Gibson.
Toronto, Ontario- On September 21, 2010, people from Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Agri-Food Trade Commission, Industry and various representatives participated in the seminar which focused on how Canadian manufacturers can take advantage of the Middle East and Southeast Asia markets. Susan Powell, President, Canadian Food Exporters Association (CFEA), hosted this event with the cooperation of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. National Foods Limited, a Pakistani company founded in 1970 which started out as a spice company, is now IFANCA halal-Certified. Renowned for its blend of pre-mixed dried spice blends; its products are sold worldwide. Each product is designed to replicate the spices for an authentic Indian or Pakistani dish. In 1988, National Foods became the certified vendor of McCormick, USA. In the same year, National Foods, then a Private Limited company was converted into a Public Limited, listed on all the three stock exchanges in Pakistan. Today its range of spice mixes includes over110 products in 12 major categories.
