Prepared Foods magazine, in its May 2010 issue, featured "Halal Reaches Growing Market". IFANCA and its client, the halal-certified ingredient supplier, ICL Performance Products were sources for the article. According to it, halal certification serves as to differentiate products at a time when new product introductions are low. Further, it read, "The market extends beyond the Muslim population. Some general consumers try halal-certified food for the added value of the food manufacturing process. This demand will continue..."
IFANCA Hosts Halal Booth at Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Food Expo 2010 in Chicago
IFANCA offered IFT attendees insights into their halal certification and information services from July 17th to 22nd, 2010, at the annual Institute Food Technologists Food Expo 2010, at its booth # 5101.
Interest in growing halal markets and halal certification has been expanding tremendously. "In the past 4 years, Datamonitor has noted that the number of global halal product launches has increased by 150 percent. The traffic we saw at the IFANCA booth reinforced that data," said Maria Omar, IFANCA Media Relations Director.
Visitors to the booth included current clients, companies interested in learning more about the certification process, and organizations whose certifications were in process. "Our food technologists, Zeshan Sadek, Mujahed Khan and Dr. Masood were right there to answer technical questions. The fact that questions revolved around specific halal technical inquiries, speaks volumes on the strides IFANCA has made in promoting halal for the past 28 years in the global food industry," said Ms. Omar. "The interest is higher than anything we have seen in the past 10 years for halal food ingredients," he said. Dr. Chaudry estimates an 80% percent growth in halal certification of ingredients and food products since 2005 for US and global halal markets. This increase for US halal market ingredients may reflect the overall estimated $170 billion US dollar purchasing power of American-Muslims. Dr. Chaudry has estimated that the purchasing power for food items alone may well exceed $20 billion US dollars.
"An overwhelming majority of the companies on the floor that were halal-certified, or who had displayed their halal certification symbols, were IFANCA clients," said Ms. Omar. "The display of halal-certification symbols (at the booths) signifies that the food industry understands the importance consumers give to credible third-party halal certification. It’s a development in the right direction, for the halal industry overall."

IFANCA Client Med-Diet Labs at the ISNA Islamic Convention, July 2-5
Minnesota-based Med-Diet, Inc., an IFANCA Client, used the ISNA Convention to announce the launching of its new E-commerce site, www.HalalHealthy.com. This mega-event attracted over 30,000 Muslims with more than 2000 attendees visiting the Halal Healthy booth.
The new HalalHealthy.com site offers both 100% halal-certified and naturally halal shelf-stable products, ranging from spices to whey protein drinks to beef jerky, all delivered to your door.
In addition, HalalHealthy.com is introducing the Ramadan Care Pack, which contains many traditional foods for Suhoor and Iftaar. It is available in three cuisines: South Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean/African. The Care Pack comes with "Healthy Fasting Guidelines for Ramadan" guidelines, which have been developed by dietitians.
Over 1600 visitors to the Halal Healthy booth received free issues of the IFANCA flagship publication, Halal Consumer, and several hundred signed up for a subscription to the magazine.
"More than 1,000 people filled out surveys providing vital data concerning the halal products and related site content that they'd like to see at HalalHealthy.com. We value these inputs because they will shape our website and its future offerings," said Don Tymchuck, President of Med-Diet. "We were also very pleasantly surprised to have so many vendors visit our booth to discuss how we could team up to distribute their products," said Mr. Tymchuck. "We're evaluating a range of products from halal natural lotions and bar soaps to halal gummy bears. We require halal certification, preferably through IFANCA, before considering them as potential partners."
Besides the survey, "We had inquiries from attendees who wanted a Ramadan Care Pack when they were travelling on business and needed a halal meal to end their fast, and we had professionals commenting on it being an ideal pack to have when they were working overtime and couldn't get home for dinner," said Naazish YarKhan, Managing Editor, Halal Consumer magazine, who was at the booth. "And there were college students who said being able to make halal purchases online at HalalHealthy, was exactly what they needed, because their schools lacked a halal meal plan. It was just the right thing to have in their dorm room, for the pre-dawn Ramadan meal, Suhoor or Sihri."
Newly Weds, Producer of Customized Food Coatings, is Halal-Certified
"In 1932 Paul Angell married sheet cake and ice cream together," reads the Chicago based company's web site, www.NewlyWedsFoods.com, "to form the world's first ice cream cake roll." It was this marriage of cake and ice cream that lead to the company being christened as Newly Weds Foods. In 1952, the company began to supply batters and breadings for the then-emerging frozen food industry. By the mid-fifties, Newly Weds Foods had become the largest producer of customized food coatings in the US and continues to hold that position today. Along the road, they established a presence in Europe, opened three new facilities. Many of the company's products are now IFANCA halal-certified, and the company continues to be a leader in food ingredient technology. The company makes seasonings, marinades, glazes, sauces, batters, breadings, binders, and fillers for the food processing and foodservice industries in some 70 countries throughout the world. Newly Weds uses its proprietary database, FlavorTrak, to monitor restaurant trends and then develop flavors it hopes will appeal to the most consumers. Newly Weds boasts that it has expertise in providing ingredients for 46 different cuisines. The company currently owns and operates 23 production plants and 17 laboratories.
