IFANCA® Recognized as Best Compliance Company at Global Islamic Economy Summit

Dubai, UAE (November 25, 2013) — The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA®) received the Islamic Economy Award for Compliance and Standardization at the Global Islamic Economy Summit (GIES®). The award is based on IFANCA’s exemplary halal compliance procedures and practices that it maintains in more than 50,000 food, beverage and pharmaceutical products in over 100 countries.

The Islamic Economy Award is the flagship award for the Global Islamic Economy Summit organized by Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading information provider. It is being held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The Islamic Economy Award celebrates established and emerging companies that have demonstrated significant business and social impact using the Islamic economic ethos.

Dr. Muhammad Munir Chaudry, President of IFANCA, received the award and commented by saying, “It is an honor to be recognized for not only best global practices in halal ingredient certification but also the social impact that IFANCA has provided to the global food industry. The production of halal certified food creates jobs, grows companies and improves lives and communities. I am proud of my IFANCA team for dedicating their lives towards maintaining first-class halal compliance standards that help halal consumers enjoy products everywhere in the world.”

Dr. Muhammad Munir Chaudry was also a speaker at the conference on a panel titled “Halal Lifestyle — Total Health Management or Just Ingredients? Advancing the Concept of Halal Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care”. The Global Islamic Economy Summit 2013 was designed to facilitate a forum for Islamic Finance sectors and the Halal industries — including food, travel and lifestyle. Attendees were invited to engage in meaningful discussions, tackle the most important challenges, and chart paths for the future of the Islamic Economy. The conference featured 14 Islamic Economy Award categories including Islamic Microfinance; Halal Food; Travel; Media; SME Development; and a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

IFANCA® Director of Halal Development Educates
Food and Nutrition Professionals on Halal Dietary Needs
at 2013 Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE®)

Houston, TX (October 17, 2013) — The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA®) Director of Halal Development, Asma Ahad, will discuss halal dietary needs at the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE®) on October 20, 2013.

This is the first time an education session on halal dietary information will take place at FNCE. The session is titled “Mythbusters: The Facts All RDs and DTRs Need to Know About Halal and Kosher Dietary Markets.”

“Eight to nine million American Muslims form the majority of halal consumers in the United States,” says Ahad. She hopes the session will help RDs develop cross-cultural competency skills needed to understand the halal dietary market, both regionally and globally. “Our hope is to be able to convey the ease with which dietitians can provide halal nutrition in either clinical, foodservice or community-based settings,” she adds.

Recently, requests for halal meals in schools, colleges, and hospitals have increased, reflecting the needs of American Muslim consumers. IFANCA is committed to increasing halal education for registered dietitians and foodservice professionals. Last year, IFANCA participated in a dietetics webinar called “A Farm to Fridge Journey into the World of Halal”. In 2011, IFANCA published the world’s first comprehensive Halal Foodservice Kit, which has a separate guidelines section for food and nutrition professionals. The kit is available for free on IFANCA’s website (www.ifanca.org).

IFANCA® Arranges IFtar for IFT Attendees Observing the Fast of Ramadan.

(July 9, 2013 - CHICAGO, IL) The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA) has arranged an Iftar every evening for attendees of the Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting and Expo that will be fasting. The meeting is scheduled for July 13-16 at McCormick Place South in Chicago. The Iftar will be available at the Downtown Islamic Center located at 231 South State Street in Chicago around 8:30 PM each evening.

This year’s Annual Meeting and Expo falls during the month of Ramadan when Muslims are required to fast. Though the requirement to fast is waived for those who are traveling, many Muslims prefer to observe the fast rather than having to make up the missed days later in the year. This is especially true when their travels take them to a locale where there is a local Muslim community that can assist them. It is IFANCA’s pleasure to be able to facilitate their fasting and breaking the fast (Iftar) with fellow Muslims. It is also convenient to do so in a Mosque where they can also observe the special Taraweeh prayers that are held during Ramadan. We thank the Downtown Islamic Center for their services and support. The Downtown Islamic Center recognizes that guests from out of town may need to take a little food with them for the early morning meal (Sahoor) before fasting begins.
